2026 Burnham Art Trail – Venue 3

We’ve dubbed ourselves the Fernlea Creatives and we had a fantastic 2026 Burnham Art Trail at Venue 3, the gorgeous garden at 4 Fernlea Road. I showed my experimental monoprints in the shed, Sue showed her oil landscapes in the outhouse, Joscelyn exhibited her paintings in the tent and our hostess, Frances, showed her mixed media pieces in the main seating area under the vine. Andrew, our host, took care of the admin and the pond, and kept us hydrated and caffeinated throughout the nine scorching days.

Click here to see a video I made of Venue 3 on day 1 of the Trail.

Here we all are, under the vine: from left to right, Andrew, me, Sue, Joscelyn and Frances.

As well as welcoming visitors and showing them our artwork, we had lots of laughs and chats, supporting each other through our creative ups and downs, and painted and drew throughout the week. I have been exceptionally lucky to have free access to harvest flowers from my friend’s beautifully abundant allotment, so as well as adorning our work and communal spaces I painted them in watercolour.

I wanted to practice painting in just watercolour rather that using my default pen and watercolour method, hence the slight departure in style this season.

There were a couple of days when the temperature reached over 35C, so as well as emergency Magnums, we cooled our heels in a big bucket of cold water prepared by Andrew and modelled by me above. That dress in the photo is made from a duvet cover I found in a charity shop a few years ago, turns out it could’ve been donated by a friend of Sue’s!

As well as enjoying the community of fellow artists and visitors in the Franklin’s delightful garden, showing my work in their lovely garden shed is a very special treat (above and below).

Huge thanks for the generosity of: Roger Barcroft, the Trail coordinator in 2026; the Franklins; all the other artists who helped to organise the most ambitious Trail so far; the artists who entered their artwork; the people who made space to show that work in their venues; and all the visitors who braved the heat to lift our spirits with their warm words, positive feedback and, in some case, cash! It’s truly a privilege to experience this sense of community and creativity.

Clerkenwell Concertina Sketchbook

I spent a bit of time in London last summer, staying with lovely friends on Clerkenwell Green. I took to meandering within and around Clerkenwell’s borders, taking photos of interesting, inspiring and quirky scenes, buildings and objects with an eye to making drawings of them later. (You can click on the images to make them larger).

In anticipation, I had made a concertina sketchbook by carefully folding and tearing an A2 sheet of gorgeous Arches watercolour paper. I bought the paper from Stuart R Stevenson on Clerkenwell Road – my favourite art supplies store – a veritable treasure trove of arts and crafts materials. I always have to enter with a carefully thought out shopping list to avoid being bedazzled into over spending. The shop is depicted on the right below.

Above are some mainly animal related details I came across in St Barts the Great Church (just over the Clerkenwell border in Spitalfields), the Charterhouse Chapel (Barbican) where the greyhound, wood carved pew ends are the symbol of the man who financed the building, and Eagle Street (Clerkenwell, close to Cowcross Yards).

Mixed Media Pieces – Burnham Art Trail 2025

I’m sticking with the nature theme for Burnham Art Trail 2025. I’ve made small mixed media paintings inspired by the flowers that were blooming in some of the artists’ studio gardens during Art Trail week last year.

Come and visit 4 Fernlea Road, Burnham-on-Crouch, CM0 8EJ 11am-5pm from Saturday 21st until Sunday 29th June 2025

You an check out the info for all the venues and artists on the Burnham Art Trail website.

These eryngiums were shining in the sunshine in the garden of Studio 4A in Witney Road.

Also known as giant sea holly – they are spitefully sharp – and Miss Willmott’s ghost after a legendary nineteenth century gardener who would secretly sow the seeds in other people’s gardens.

eryngium, mixed media, artwork, painting, drawing, marker pen, watercolour, oil paint, coloured pencil, crackle glaze, Burnham Art Trail 2025, garden, nature, flower, spikes

I started painting these while hanging out in the Franklins’ beautiful garden at 4 Fernlea Road (my own venue). I finished them off with a crackle glaze and glitter gel as I felt that they reflected the shiny, spininess off the plant.

Burnham Art Trail 2025, giant scabious, flower, petals, nature, permanent marker, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold ink, collage, felt pen

I was really drawn to these blousy giant scabious flowers which were blooming in the Frankins’ garden.

Burnham Art Trail 2025, giant scabious, flower, petals, nature, permanent marker, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold ink, collage, felt pen

I started with permanent marker and watercolour paint and then deepened the greens of the centre of the flowers with coloured pencil and felt tip pen.

Burnham Art Trail 2025, giant scabious, flower, petals, nature, permanent marker, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold ink, collage, felt pen

I accentuated the shape of the circular centre by transferring gold ink with the rim of a glass and added the contrast of the collaged text.

Burnham Art Trail 2025, water lily, flower, petals, nature, permanent marker, watercolour, coloured pencil, text, collage, felt pen

The next three paintings were inspired by the gorgeous water lilies in the Franklins’ pond.

And I chose to depict the daisies in the three paintings below:

I apllied little blobs of acrylic paint to add texture and intense colour to the yellow centres.

And then I painted three versions of the verbena / vervain:

And these pansies were blooming on the patio at home during Art Trail week, rather than in the Franklins’ garden:

Pen and Wash Demonstration for Burnham Art Club

I chose this beautiful white weatherboard house as the subject of my recent pen and wash demonstration for Burnham Art Club.

I was delighted to show my pen and wash portraits of beautiful Maldon High Street in the Maeldune Centre, at the top of Market Hill, Maldon, from 17th August to 2nd September 2023.

The exhibition had a tremendously generous reception from Maeldune Centre visitors and volunteers alike. By far the star of the show was the black and white print I had made for the table tops in the centre of the gallery. People had great fun colouring it in and writing on it; the comments and shared memories of Maldon High Street were really touching. As the exhibition drew to a close the Maldon Society photographed it for their archive – I was truly honoured.

Maldon historian Stephen Nunn visited a couple of times and I was able to add some fascinating facts about the High Street to the interactive artwork as he dictated. Here he is with my dad, Ron, who was also very enthusiastic and generous with his High Street memories.

The Maldon Society is in the process of adding photos of the interactive piece and digital versions of the original paintings to their archive. I am truly an honour.
